2014 PPWSL Tryouts

Tryouts have been canceled for Sunday, 3/30 due to poor field conditions. Please join us and tryout on the scheduled rain date, Sunday, April 6! (see registration details below)

It may be cold out there but the 2014 PPWSL tryouts are starting! Come join us during open tryouts for the Prospect Park Women's Softball League (PPWSL), a women's instructional softball league. All skill levels, ages 18 and over are welcome. Download the 2014 PPWSL Tryouts flyer here and the map here.

Additional message for women who pitch and players with advanced softball skills - please consider trying out this year and joining the PPWSL! In addition to players of all positions and skill-levels, the PPWSL has a specific need for:

  • Pitchers - PPWSL plays modified fastpitch (not high arc/slow and not fastpitch/windmill), as per ASA Pitching Rules
  • Players with advanced playing skills to help instruct and motivate lower-rated players

Tryout schedule: Important, you MUST register during the registration period in order to tryout. Late arrivals will be turned away.

  • Wednesday, March 26: registration 5:00pm - 5:30pm, tryout 5:30pm - 6:30pm
  • Saturday, March 29: registration: 8:30 - 9:30am, tryout: 9:30am - 12pm
  • Sunday, March 30: registration: 8:30 - 9:30am, tryout: 9:30am - 12pm

- If necessary, rain dates will be Wednesday, April 2, Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6; times as above

Cost and equipment: There is a mandatory, non-refundable tryout fee of $5.00 due at time of registration. Please bring sneakers and a glove. The tryout is held on a hard surface so no street shoes or cleats please.

Tryout location: Greenwood Playground's Kevin F. Conroy Ballfield in Windsor Terrace. The Playground is located at the corner of Fort Hamilton Parkway and East 5th Street. Please note: this location is subject to change - please check www.ppwsl.org prior to tryout date for any changes.

Subway: The southernmost portion of the Fort Hamilton F-train station exits at the southeast corner of the playground. Queens-bound passengers should exit at the rear of the train and
Coney Island-bound (Brooklyn) should exit at the front of the train.

About the tryouts: To try out for the league, come to one of the dates posted. Potential players will be rated on their ability to bat, field and throw and will receive a score that will determine their overall level of ability (beginner, low intermediate, middle intermediate, high intermediate or advanced). Players will be placed on a team in a "blind" draft according to their ranking as well as according to what openings there are on the teams for players of that rank. First priority is given to people who tried out for the previous season but were not placed on a team (this number varies from season to season). Once those people have been placed, those who have tried out for the upcoming season will have their names drawn randomly, by rank, until all the teams' rosters are filled. Please note: trying out does not guarantee you a position on a team.

About the games: The PPWSL is a modified pitch (not-high arc/slow pitch and not fastpitch/windmill), instructional league and plays in Prospect Park, Brooklyn on weekday nights beginning in late April or early May. Games begin at 6:20pm.

Weather: March weather is often questionable. Despite that, the tryouts will go ahead unless there is a true downpour or steady rain that makes the playground field unsafe and unusable.
